When we visit our family doctor or check into a local hospital for a minor procedure, we often take for granted the competency of the medical professionals we encounter. We are usually correct in our belief that we will receive the proper treatment, delivered in a safe and secure environment. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, as instances of medical negligence, or malpractice, continue to dominate the headlines across the country, with some cases tragically resulting in a death that could have been prevented. It is perhaps the greatest tragedy of all: when serious injury, or the death of a loved one, could have been avoided had the medical professional responsible for the patient's care simply done his or her job correctly. When such a tragedy occurs, the victim's family is entitled by law to just, fair compensation.
Mistakes made in the operating room, the incorrect diagnosis of a medical condition, or failure on the part of health care workers to carry out a doctor's orders in a timely fashion can leave the patient with a lifetime of physical problems; or worse yet, lead to the death of that individual. Caring for a loved one who has been disabled as the result of medical malpractice can consume a family member's life, not to mention the tremendous costs associated with a never-ending series of medical procedures, treatments and medications.
